Everyone, this is Erik Johnson. Today I’m going to talk to you about the five powerful steps into becoming a powerful network marketer. Now, who am I?
I am a guy who just seven years ago was flipping burgers for $11 an hour; and five years before that, I was a drunk getting drunk twice a day and not eating food anymore, and my friends were worried that I was going to die any day.
So I’ve come a long way. I’ve made over six figures in network marketing, and I’ve recruited over 1700 people personally into my network marketing opportunity. So I know a little bit about network marketing now and I’m going to share with you and hopefully shave off a lot of the learning curve in your progress towards success because it’s all about mindset.
It’s also about education because network marketing operates like a different business. It is not like a corporate business at all. It is a selfless profession. So the quicker you can get your ego and your pride out of the equation, the faster you can have success.
I struggled for many years until I plugged into the training and the mentors that have given me the best tips in the world and techniques and my business exploded when I changed my mindset. So it’s all about mindset. And it’s all about training and education, but it’s also about taking action. So I congratulate you for taking action by watching this video or reading this article today.
We’re going to cover a lot of ground. So take notes, and share this with your teams. Because if your team understands these principles, you can start getting exponential growth in your business and skyrocket your income and get out of that predicament – out of that stressful job or whatever it is you’re trying to do. Improve your life.
So let’s get started. So the five steps for becoming a better network marketer is number one:
One – Why to Cry
I call it why to cry. Now, what is your Why? Why are you doing network marketing? Your “why” has to be so powerful that it literally brings tears to your eyes. This is why you’re doing network marketing because there’s going to be hard days, there’s going to be hard weeks, where you really need to think about your why, why you’re staying involved, why you want to do this. It could be wanting to get your kids into college, it could be wanting to pay off your house, it could be wanting to get out of debt.
When I started network marketing in 2014, I had $80 left on a credit card. That’s all the money I had. I was $35,000 in debt. I used the last 80 on a credit card to get started in network marketing. That was 2014, okay, and it changed my life.
I’ve been working full time from home for the last three years, I can do anything I want. There is no alarm clock, there are no distractions. My day is my day. 100% Okay, except for my wife and I, you know, we do things together and all that but you need to have a why that makes you cry. That’s number one.
You got to really understand this, your back literally has to be against the wall for you to really make it in network marketing. You got to be like, I need to make this happen yesterday. That’s the kind of passion you need to really get a network marketing business off the ground.
Because it’s like a jet airplane. A jet airplane uses most of its fuel to get off the ground and up to elevation before it can start coasting. And don’t worry, you can start coasting once you build an organization but in the beginning, you have to use most of your fuel to get your business off the ground. So know your why, why to cry, okay?
Two – Understand Rank and Comp Plan
Number two, you have to understand your compensation plan and really understand what rank you want to hit. And this should be just embedded in your eyelids, what rank advancement you want to make, for instance, I really am going after the 100k rank in my company.
I understand completely how many people I have to recruit and work with to get to that rank. It’s not what I do. It’s what my team does. That’s the whole point of network marketing is that in the beginning, I was a lone wolf. I thought I could just make money by myself.
I got really good at recruiting hundreds of people, but my income was not growing because I didn’t help anyone succeed. I didn’t help anyone rank advance. So it’s all about your team, and in the beginning, it is just you, but once you get people joining up, then you teach them these tips and help them succeed almost before yourself because your success is a byproduct of what your team does, and how much they succeed.
So if you want faster success, get your team a check right away. Okay, and I’ll cover that later in this video/article. So a clear rank goal 100k for me would be developing for five 20k leaders on my team, so it doesn’t take a lot of people to advance to a very high rank. If I just helped five people hit 20K, and then help them build their teams, I could hit that 100k very fast And that’s life changing.
So get a clear idea of what rank you want to hit in the company and subconsciously program your mind to hit that rank every day, do affirmations, say “I am so happy and grateful now that I am a 100k paid affiliate, I am so grateful that I have a team around the world hitting 5k rank. I am so happy and grateful that I have leaders on my team rank advancing every month. I am so happy and grateful that I am debt free now.”
I really hammer those affirmations and eventually your subconscious will get on board and you will start achieving your goals. Opportunities will just appear where you learn new techniques and skills to get to that rank. Subconsciously your subconscious is looking right now. How can I get to 100k?
Okay, I can watch this training and then find out something new and you’re just like, Oh my gosh, I never knew that, that just shaved off two years of my education, thank you new technique, I’m going to implement this tomorrow, etc, etc.
So your subconscious really will drive success if you reprogram your mind. Most people think negatively. They’re watching TV, they’re watching fear tactic news. Every day, we’re just bombarded with fear because that’s what sells. The mainstream media knows that if we’re in fear, we’re going to buy things to try to survive, okay, we’re gonna listen to them because they’re saying that our lives are in jeopardy.
So we’re going to focus on survival instead of success and you want to focus on your success, and not the fear that the mainstream is feeding you. All right. So unplug from mainstream and other sources as much as possible. Okay, it’s all about efficiency. It’s about you, you are training you to become successful. All your focus should be on self development.
Three – Plug Into Training (Mindset)
Number three, back to self development, you should plug into a training system. If you’re in our company, there’s a training tab on the left hand side of your dashboard. I recommend you watch all the videos especially the weekly training where entrepreneurs from around the world come on and do a guest appearance and share their nuggets of wisdom. Okay, this is gonna shave a lot of learning curves as well. You’re going to hear from the best entrepreneurs in the world 6, 7, 8 figure earners and they’ll give the best nuggets, take notes, pretend you’re in college, treat this like a serious profession and it will pay like a serious profession.
You really have to believe that you’re sitting on a million dollar business right now, you are sitting on a business that can literally change your life forever. Like it did mine. It got me out of the restaurant business. It got me out of feeling sorry for myself. It got me out of being limited by circumstance, it got me out of being stressed out about money every single minute, etc, etc.
So you are really sitting on a million dollar business. The top leaders in network marketing make over $100,000 a month, legally, there is no income cap. It’s all dependent on you and how you build your organization. So that is number three, plug into the company training. And do it every day, at least one hour a day and take notes – and if you can shoot a video after you learn something, even better.
I train all day and then I regurgitate what I learned onto video. I get it out on the internet. I create content because that attracts people to me. It’s called attraction marketing. All the leaders do it. So look into attraction marketing, that’s another video.
Four – 20 Contacts Or Leads Per Day
Number four, establish 20 contacts or leads a day. So 20 contacts could be going onto your Facebook and saying Happy Birthday to someone that you haven’t talked to yet – someone that’s in your network that you haven’t talked to yet, say, you know, happy birthday, I hope your family is doing well during these uncertain times. Reach out if you need anything, I’m here if you need anything.
That’s all you gotta say. You don’t have to pitch your company. Just make 20 contacts a day. In the beginning Ray Higdon said he went for 20 no’s a day, this is prospecting, and he would go out and hit the pavement. And he couldn’t go home until he got 20 no’s from people. It’s reverse psychology because if you say, I will do this until I get one yes and go home, then you could be only working five minutes a day.
He went after the 20 no’s, which could have equaled more than three yeses. Most people stop at one Yes. But if you go for 20 no’s a day, then you could get more yeses. So that was his philosophy and exploded his business but make 20 contacts or generate 20 leads a day or a combination.
I have grown most of my business by just learning how to generate consistent leads every single day. Now I am implementing Facebook more than ever because it’s free. A lot of people don’t want to spend money buying leads. So start hitting up your contacts on your Facebook and just say I hope you’re doing great. I just want to wish you and your family a safe time. And you know, I’m here for you if you need anything, and leave it at that.
Eventually, after maybe three to five contacts, you can then say, Hey, can you do me a favor? I’m expanding a multi million dollar company right now and I’m looking for motivated entrepreneurs. Can you watch these videos for me and tell me what you think? To see if you want to recommend this to anyone else?
You don’t want to ask What do you think? Because then they’re gonna come up with reasons why they don’t like it. So you actually when you do show them videos to your company. You say What did you like best about that? Alright, so that’s another tip that I wasn’t gonna mention today.
But you want to ask for referrals: Who do you know who wants to make extra income right now? Can you do me a favor and watch these videos so you can feel comfortable recommending this to whoever you know? And then they’ll be like, Sure, yeah.
Because it gets all the focus off of them. So they don’t feel like you’re spamming or selling them. They’re like, Oh, yeah, I could do that. I’ll watch the videos and then you give your link. You don’t mention the company. You don’t have to go into the products and all that long stuff. Just say great. Here’s my link, check out the videos and get back with me.
So that’s 20 contacts a day, consistently. Okay, you can’t just generate 20 leads and walk away for a month. This is something you have to work your way up to every single day, and it’ll have a compound effect. And eventually, in a year, you’ll have tons of contacts. You’ll have more people on your team, because you went out and you connected with people. It’s all about connecting with people.
This is something I didn’t want to do when I started network marketing, I was scared. But all you have to say is, hey, hope you’re having a great day. I’m here for you. If you need anything, all right. And if they cross promote you and try to get you in their business, all you have to say is I’m really focused on what I’m doing. We’re going places you should really check it out. If not, that’s cool. I wish you all the best of luck, okay.
That’s all you have to do. And if they get really aggressive, just block them, they shouldn’t be on your Facebook if they get nasty, if they get aggressive, or anything like that you can control your social media. All platforms have the ability to block people or comments or anything, it’s all in your control. So don’t think you’re a victim, because someone left a nasty comment. You can delete them, block them, whatever, you’re in control.
So remember that you’re in control of your whole life, your destiny and your business. Don’t be a victim anymore, okay? It’s not the company’s fault that you don’t have any success. It’s not your sponsor’s fault that you don’t have any success. You got to point the finger back at yourself. And the ego is very tricky. Pride is very tricky. It will lie to you and say that it’s everyone else’s fault, but yours because it’s trying to protect you. The ego is a liar because it wants to protect you. All right, so abolish all of that stuff, and really focus on your development and you will go far. So number five is consistency and tenacity:
Five – Consistency & Tenacity
Go back to number one – your Why. Why are you doing this? You got to have a really powerful story and why you want to get out of it. Okay, if your life sucks, this is a way to get out of it. All right. So you need tenacity, there’s going to be good days and bad days, there’s going to be bad weeks, people are going to quit your business.
And newbies don’t understand this and they take it personally. They’re like, why did that person quit? I did everything. Alright? It’s normal for people to quit. In fact, 50% might quit within a year. All right, 50%. So if you’re not recruiting anymore, your team is going to shrivel every month. Okay. So that’s why leaders keep recruiting.
They do mindset training, and they keep recruiting. They might do it passively with their YouTube channel or their blog, or they might still be running ads or doing Facebook contacting. If you can’t afford ads, then hit your social media and establish contacts but You have to do this every single day, and it’s gonna be really hard at times.
You have to understand your story, and you want to help people, you want to help people get out of their situation. It’s not about you. If you help enough people, you’ll get everything you want. So learn how to help others. If you see someone struggling, when I see someone struggling on the street, I give them money. I’m not going to think: Oh, they’re gonna just use it for beer. I don’t care. You know, whatever makes them happy for the day. If they want to buy food with it fine, if they want to buy a beer with it fine. If they want to rent a motel room fine, but I’m going to circulate my wealth by giving people money if I have it.
So you can’t hold on to money and be like, Oh no, this is mine. I got to save every penny. Okay, in the Bible, there’s a story where the king gave $10 to each disciple. And when he came back, he was like, I want my money back after six months, and the first disciple made his money multiply by 10. And the king was so proud, and gave him more money and more authority. Because that disciple turned the money into more money. He made it more abundant.
But the last disciple didn’t do anything with the money and hid it. And the king was so pissed off, he was like, give me the money back. You didn’t do crap with it. It’s the same thing with you. God wants you to do a lot with your life and he wants you to be abundant and prosperous. He doesn’t want you to just penny pinch and save every little dollar because he won’t get any more money if you’re Penny pinching.
That’s a whole nother video mindset. All right. circulate what you have, and you’ll get more back. Be very grateful for what you have and circulate it, and more will grow. But if you hold on to every penny, and you’re cutting out coupons, and going into the Dollar General, you know you’re gonna stay poor.
So save up your money and go out to a fancy restaurant once in a while, treat yourself, go to another destination, do something, save up for a car, go look at a fancy car, go look at a house in a different neighborhood and start pretending that you’re gonna buy a new home or whatever. You know, that’s called wealth building. That’s what I call it. There’s other names for it, but it’s all about vibration.
So if you raise your vibration by going to a fancy neighborhood or going to a Ferrari car dealer, or you know circulating wealth because you have plenty more or paying off a credit card in one lump sum, it’s gonna raise your vibration and more money will be attracted to you. So you have to have a good relationship with money. If you think money is evil, you’re never gonna make any and you shouldn’t even be watching this video/reading this.
Money is not evil, the love of money is evil. Money is abundant. Money is prosperity, and the more you get, the more you can give. So it’s not about hoarding it and living in a mansion and hating people and being this ruler, you know, that will be taken from you, you want to circulate. So that’s a tangent.
So that’s number five is tenacity and consistency. All the leaders have been doing this for 5, 10, 20 years. But it all starts with day one. Put one day in front of the other, and eventually you’ll have you know, I can’t believe I got Six years. I got six years in network marketing. This is the longest thing I’ve ever done, except for a relationship. I quit college after two, you know, a year and a half. I quit restaurant jobs in 18 months, 24 months, I quit everything I was a professional quitter.
Network Marketing is the only thing that I’ve kept at besides my relationships, because I know that I’m sitting on a life changing business model. So if you don’t really believe in network marketing yet, I would check out some rags to riches success stories of network marketers that have made it and really start increasing your belief because you are sitting on a real profession.
There’s over 100 million people in this profession. There’s over $200 billion a year generated with this profession. It’s not some pyramid scheme. It’s not a lottery ticket. It’s not some, if I just joined that person, they’ll make me rich. Or if I just recruit that person, they’ll make me rich. Now, you’re gonna have to learn this as a real profession, and hit the pavement and do it every single day and learn what you can take notes, create your own content, do videos, do whatever, talk to people on Facebook, say, Hey, how are you? Hope you’re well? That’s like an idea. Eventually I’ll come back to you. It’s reciprocity.
I have a bonus tip right now. It’s called Get them results. I learned that from my mentor, who’s made over $50 million in network marketing. You have to get your new distributors a paycheck. As soon as possible within the first week or two. You got to teach them how to generate income. Even if it’s a $10 $50 hundred dollar check, they’ll stay much longer. That’s 50% longer if you get them a check as they bootstrap their business.
If they don’t get anything, they’ll be likely gone in a month or two. All right, so help them get their first recruit, okay, they gotta get a paycheck. It doesn’t matter if it’s 10 or 15 bucks. Okay, you have to help your new rep get a new Rep. That’s duplication. It’s all about duplication in network marketing. It’s not what you do. It’s what your team does. So help them get a new Rep. And that’s it guys. I hope this helps share this with your network marketing or direct selling teams.
